Regional Services is responsible for:
- delivering our annual program of work (except for major projects and registration and licensing) through 7 regions
- delivering tram and bus priority programs
- managing real-time operation of the road network.
There are 10 business areas in this division. Seven of these business areas represent a specific region. Each region’s business area is responsible for that region, including:
- land use and strategic transport planning
- road safety behavioural and community programs
- developing programs to improve the mobility of road users
- developing proposals to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on the road
- advertising and community signs
- traffic operations.
The Metro North West region has around 170 staff looking after 15 municipalities, including Hume, Melton, Brimbank, Nillumbik, Whittlesea, Moreland, Banyule, Moonee Valley, Wyndham, Hobsons Bay, Yarra, Port Phillip, Maribyrnong, Darebin and Melbourne’s CBD.
This region extends over 3000 square kilometres and includes major roads such as the West Gate Freeway. The road network in this region carries the heaviest traffic volumes in Victoria.
The Metro South East region has around 170 staff looking after around 7000 kilometres of arterial roads, which account for almost 40% of Victoria's road travel.
Metro South East covers 16 municipalities, including busy traffic routes such as the Monash Freeway, the Eastern Freeway, EastLink and Chapel Street in Prahran. The region includes areas such as Mt Donna Buang, Narre Warren and the Mornington Peninsula.
The Eastern region spans from Bunyip River on the Princes Highway (East) to the New South Wales border and from the Alpine snowfields to the coastline along Wilson’s Promontory and Phillip Island.
The Eastern region has around 80 staff working in offices in Traralgon and Bairnsdale.
The North Eastern region covers an area of around 30,000 square kilometres, and includes major regional centres such as Shepparton, Wodonga, Benalla, Omeo and Seymour. The extensive 8336 kilometre road network of this region includes the Hume Freeway and the Goulburn Valley Highway.
North Eastern region has around 60 staff based in the Benalla regional office.
The Northern region team is based in Bendigo. Their area covers 38,200 square kilometres, from the outer northern metropolitan suburbs to the Murray River and Robinvale. The team of 70 staff is responsible for around 8080 kilometres of arterial roads and 829 structures.
Western region is geographically the largest region. It covers 12 municipalities spanning from Bacchus Marsh to Edenhope and Mildura. The 70 staff of the Western region team look after more than 9534 kilometres of arterial roads, and highways such as the Western Highway/Freeway, Midland, Sturt, Sunraysia, Midland, Calder, Henty, Wimmera, Pyrenees, Borung and Glenelg highways.
The South Western region is responsible for 8368 kilometres of arterial roads from Geelong and Port Phillip Bay to the South Australian border and from Cape Otway to the Grampians. This includes some important roads such as Princes Highway West, the Great Ocean Road and the Geelong Ring Road. The region’s 85 staff are located in Geelong and Warrnambool.
Regional Services Support provides central support to the regions to ensure we effectively deliver the regional program of works. This includes coordinating, monitoring and reporting on the regional services program and identifying, influencing and leading organisationally beneficial change projects within the division.
Tram and Bus Projects are responsible for the Think Tram and SmartBus programs.
- Think Tram implements projects designed to give trams priority on roads, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Yarra Trams.
- SmartBus is a cross-town network of bus routes on major arterial roads, with initiatives to give buses priority, as well as new bus stops, bus lanes and traffic signals.
Road User Services focuses on the overall operational management of the road network. The business area comprises four distinct, but related areas:
- Network Operations
- Traffic Management Centre and the Incident Management Team
- Intelligent Transport Systems
- Heavy Vehicle Permits and Investigations.
Steve Brown
Steve has worked with VicRoads for more than 36 years. He is responsible for delivering VicRoads annual program and managing regional services.
He started as a cadet engineer and moved into senior roles including regional director and manager of various business areas. Steve has been a member of many VicRoads reference groups and was Australia's representative on the World Road Association's technical committee for pavement surfacing.
Steve has a Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours).
This division reports to the Chief Operating Officer, Bruce Gidley.
