VicRoads purpose is to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to communities throughout Victoria by managing the Victorian road network and its use as an integral part of the overall transport system. For people with a disability, social and economic participation in society can be hampered by difficulties in accessing transport and customer services.
VicRoads is working to make the transport system as accessible as possible in partnership with the Department of Transport, transport operators and Local Government. Increasing the range of places that people can access in a reasonable time increases people’s social and economic opportunities. For example, access to the road system and public transport services has been made safer and easier for people with a disability through the installation of textured tiles on walking surfaces, wheelchair accessible ramps and audio-tactile pedestrian push buttons.
VicRoads will further our efforts to support persons with a disability using road based transport with this Disability Action Plan (2009-2011). Developed following extensive consultation with disability groups, Department of Planning and Community Development and VicRoads staff, it targets actions in customer service, provision of information, physical improvements to facilities and the transport system and recruitment and training to help reduce barriers, promote inclusion and avoid discrimination.
