Almost 10,000 bicycles are stolen in Victoria every year. This represents a cost to the community of approximately $4.0 million per year.
- 80% of bicycles that are stolen, were left unlocked;
- very few bicycles are returned to their owners because it is difficult to trace a bicycle to its owner;
- 50% of bicycles that are stolen are taken from people’s homes;
- 90% of people do not lock their bicycles at home.
You can reduce the chances of your bicycle being stolen and minimise the effects if it is stolen by taking the following four easy steps.
- “U” locks and flexible cables are recommended for locking your bicycle.
- If you can, try and lock your bicycle against a parking rail or an object that cannot be removed or the bicycle lifted over.
- Identify your bicycle
The chances of your bicycle being returned will be greatly improved if you engrave the licence number onto the frame of the bicycle and take a photograph of your bicycle.
- Bicycles can be insured against theft and damage and may be covered by your home and contents insurance policy. It is suggested that you obtain more information on this from your insurance company.
