Road safety education at primary school generally focuses on passenger and pedestrian safety. Children begin to take more responsibility for keeping themselves safe on the road – such as remembering to use a seat belt, being safe on and around public transport, selecting safe places to cross roads and using the correct road crossing procedure. In Years 4 to 6, bicycle education also becomes a key focus. However, up until age 12 most children do not have the skills and experience to be safe in complex traffic without supervision.
Although out of print, many schools will have a copy of RoadSmart in their resource centre or library. While a new resource for primary schools is being developed, schools can purchase RoadSmart Discussion Prints and CD ROM from the VicRoads Bookshop and download the selected activities from this page.
