VicRoads is responsible for upgrading and completing strategic sections of the Principal Bicycle Network in metropolitan Melbourne and Priority Bicycle Routes in regional cities and towns. Bicycle facilities are also provided as part of major road projects, where appropriate.
Off-road paths are generally located along rivers, through recreation reserves and through open space corridors. They are also located adjacent to freeways. Off-road paths are ideal for recreational cycling and are suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Off-road paths are also used by commuter cyclists.
On-road lanes are located adjacent to existing traffic lanes and are designed to separate cyclists from other types of traffic. On-road lanes are most suitable for commuter cyclists who want to minimise travel times. On-road lanes are also used by training cyclists.
Wide left lanes provide space for cyclists and motor vehicles to share the lane. In these circumstances, the left lane is between 3.7 and 4.2 m wide. They are generally used when there is insufficient road width to create an exclusive bicycle lane.
Bicycle parking and end-of-trip facilities give cyclists the opportunity to park their bicycles in a place that is convenient and secure and will assist in encouraging more people to cycle more often. See the brochure Bicycle parking: providing bicycle parking facilities [PDF, 612 kb, 4 pp].
