Cycling Data and Statistics

Introduction

Cycling data and statistics are an important component of a mature bicycle program. It is important that planners and engineers have accurate data on where cycling trips are occurring, the demographics of cyclists and the types of trips that cyclists are making.

VicRoads collects and reports cycling data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics Census for cycling trips to work every five years. VicRoads has also installed 17 permanent inductive loop counters on the off-road path network around Melbourne. These counters count bicycle volumes 24 hours per day, every day of the year.

In the past, VicRoads has also reported bicycle ownership, use and cyclist demographics from data obtained through the Victorian Activity and Travel Survey (VATS).
