Description of Bicycle Facilities

Off-road paths

Off-road paths are generally located along rivers, through recreation reserves and through open space corridors. They can also be located adjacent to freeways.

Off-road paths are ideal for recreational cycling and are suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Off-road paths can also be used by commuter cyclists who want to travel to work and to school.

On-road lanes

On-road lanes are located adjacent to existing traffic lanes and are designed to separate cyclists from other types of traffic.

On-road lanes are most suitable for commuter cyclists who want to minimise their travel times. On-road lanes are also used by training cyclists.

Wide left lanes

Traffic lanes on roads are generally between 3 m and 3.5 m in width.

Wide left lanes provide space for cyclists and motor vehicles to share the lane. In these circumstances, the left lane is between 3.7 m and 4.2 m wide. They are generally used when there is insufficient road width to create an exclusive bicycle lane.
