During 2005 VicRoads carried out a major review of its requirements for location referencing of road related assets and events. The review was performed by the then Land Information and Survey business unit, which has now been partially incorporated into Information Management Services.
The Location Referencing System Requirements Analysis had set two goals:
1. The Location Referencing System should allow the location of road asset features and events on the road network in a standardised manner that will support corporate requirements for interoperability across data management architectures, and reinforce compliance with formal procedures.
2. The Location Referencing System should facilitate decision support through the display, analysis and reporting of road asset features and events, and road management programs.
