What is a gap year?
A gap year is a year off from study between VCE students finishing secondary school and taking up a tertiary placement offer. During this 12 month period students may want to experience a work placement relevant to their tertiary study offering.

Features of the VicRoads Gap Year
VicRoads may offer full time gap placements for 12 months, commencing March 2013 to students who have a university offer to study any of the following engineering streams; civil, environmental, geomatic, and geotechnical.

A gap year placement will give engineering students the opportunity to sample working life at VicRoads with a view to encouraging them to consider vacation employment and perhaps a permanent job at VicRoads on completion of their degree.

Gap students will be paid VRO1-1, $33,714p.a. plus 9% superannuation (note a new Enterprise Bargaining Agreement is being negotiated and may result in an increase to the listed salaries).

Students will also be supported and trained throughout their placement.

Further opportunities with VicRoads
Upon completion of the gap year, students will normally commence their full time tertiary studies. During their degree, students who participated in the program are encouraged to apply for vacation employment during the summer break from University.

Pre-requisite requirements
  • Have received a 2013 offer from an Australian university to study any of the engineering streams listed above, and be deferring commencement of the placement for a period of 12 months
  • Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

Expressions of interest for 2013 Gap Year will open on Monday 14 January 2013.
