The National Transport Commission (NTC) is an independent body created and funded by all Australian Governments (Commonwealth, States and Territories) to lead national transport regulatory reform.
The NTC is based in Melbourne and is headed by six Commissioners and has a staff of just over 30 people. The Commission's role includes regulatory reform in road, rail and inter-modal transport.
The six areas of national regulatory reform are:
- Safety
- Environment
- Efficiency
- Compliance
- Road pricing
- Evaluation and maintenance
The NTC replaced the National Road Transport Commission NRTC on 15 January 2004. The reform agenda of the NRTC transferred to the NTC, with the addition of responsibility for rail and inter-modal regulatory reform.
