Heavy vehicle driving test

The heavy vehicle driving test is designed to test low speed manoeuvring skills such as reversing and also driving the heavy vehicle on the road. To obtain a heavy vehicle endorsement, you must also complete an eyesight test and a heavy vehicle knowledge test.

Vehicle Inspections
You will be assessed on your knowledge of the following during your test.

  • operator controls
  • external safety


Controlling the vehicle
Whilst driving the vehicle your licence testing officer will assess you on:

  • acceleration
  • cutting - in
  • shifting gears
  • braking
  • steering
  • steering in reverse
  • double clutching


Loading

  • dimensions (height, weight, length, mass)
  • projecting loads


Trailer use (if applicable)

  • coupling
  • uncoupling


The practical test will also assess your skill in:

  • accelerating
  • gear changing
  • lane keeping
  • signalling
  • braking
  • positioning the vehicle on the road
  • judging of distance
  • keeping a proper speed for conditions
  • observing other road users and adjusting your driving to allow for their actions



Test Vehicle
The test vehicle must be appropriate for the category of heavy vehicle endorsement you are seeking and be equipped with seatbelts for all occupants during the assessment.

If you do a heavy vehicle driving test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, you must bring a heavy vehicle and an accompanying driver who holds a current Australian driver licence which enables him/her to drive a vehicle of the type/class being driven. Overseas licence holders are not permitted as an accompanying driver.

If you attend a Heavy Vehicle Test and Training Provider, you will not be required to supply a vehicle and accompanying driver.
