Permit Applications Frequently Asked Questions

1. What fees are involved in applying for a permit?

The cost of the permit is $54.10.

2. What do I get for my permit fee?

Your fee covers the cost of assessment and processing of an application. Applications for non-standard low loader and platform trailers may incur additional assessment costs in relation to stresses on bridges and large culverts.


3. How do I pay the application fees?

There are a number of options available to you.

  1. Fax your application directly to the Statewide Permit Group, electing to complete the credit card section on the form or if you have a current credit account with VicRoads including your credit number on the application;

  2. Post your application to a permit office listed on the application attaching a cheque marked “Not negotiable” made out to VicRoads;.or 

  3. Attend any VicRoads customer service centre paying by cash, cheque or credit card where your application form will then be forwarded on your behalf to a VicRoads permit issuing office.


4. Are load inspections, weighing, route surveys or VicRoads escorting services included in my application fee?

No. Any charges relating to vehicle inspection, vehicle weighing, route survey or escorting by VicRoads Transport Safety Services Officers will be in addition to the permit application fee.


5. What is the cost of a vehicle inspection/weighing, route survey or escort if required?

$103.55 per hour. With a minimum of 2 hours including travel.


6. How long are permits issued for?

Permits may be issued for up to 12 months, depending on the size and mass of the vehicle, the route to be traveled and operating conditions. Generally, the larger and heavier the vehicle, the shorter the duration of the permit.


7. What if I don’t wish to proceed with my permit application?

If the permit has been lodged, the application fee (s) is non-refundable. The fee applies whether a permit is ultimately issued or not.
