Vehicle Management and Safety

VicRoads has the responsibility to ensure that when vehicles are used on the roads, they are safe for use and used in a safe manner.

The Vehicle Management and Safety group is responsible for determining and managing the minimum vehicle requirements for all motor vehicles and trailers. This includes mandating standards for vehicle design, providing general mass and dimension limits, providing uniform conditions under which vehicles may be exempted from regulations, and providing information to drivers of heavy vehicles about driving vehicles safely.

In carrying out that responsibility, VicRoads investigates, develops and monitors road transport policies for heavy vehicles to facilitate their safe and efficient operation, whilst minimising their impact on the environment.

VicRoads also facilitates the implementation in Victoria of national and state road transport reforms, particularly reforms relating to mass and dimension limits, access to the road network, vehicle safety and driver safety.

If you would like to receive information about heavy vehicles, please register your details.
