Q. I want to get a car learner permit. What do I need to do?
A.
You will need to study the Road to Solo Driving handbook and then make a booking by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 to take a knowledge test based on our road rules and driver responsibilities. See How to get your car learner permit

Q. I want to get my probationary car licence. What do I need to do?
A.
Once you have held your learner permit for the minimum time, and have recorded at least 120 hours of driving including ten hours at night (if you are under 21 years of age), you can book your test online or call us on 13 11 71 to make an appointment for a hazard perception test and a driving test. Q. I want to get my motorcycle licence. How can I get some training before I go for the test?
A. You can go to any of the VicRoads accredited training providers. There you can have training and take the learner permit and licence tests. See Accredited Training & Test Providers for Motorcycles.

Q. How do I get my heavy vehicle licence? I want to do some training before I go for the test.
A.
You can go to any VicRoads accredited training provider. They will provide training and take your heavy vehicle licence test. See Accredited Training & Test Providers for Heavy Vehicles.

Q. I have moved address. How can I change my address on my licence and vehicle registration?
A.
You can change your address online. It is important that you let us know within 14 days of changing your address. It is an offence if you fail to do so and fines may apply.

Q. I have moved address. Do I need a new driver licence?
A. 
You do not need to replace your current driver licence. For residential address changes, VicRoads will issue you a new address sticker to put on the back of your current driver licence within 7 working days. If you do not receive your new address sticker within 7 working days, please resubmit your new residential address details online.
                                                                                                                                                                      
Q. My driver licence is due for renewal. How can I renew my licence?
A.
Details of how to renew your driver licence is explained on the renewal notice and enclosed brochure. If you have not received your renewal notice, it may be due to not informing us of your new address. Update your address now. You can also renew your licence by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 or by attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. See Renewing your licence.

Q. I need to transfer my interstate licence to a Victorian licence. What do I need to do?
A.
If you hold a licence from interstate or New Zealand and it is current or expired by less than 5 years, you will not be required to do a test to change it over. You will need to make an appointment and attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to change your licence over to Victorian. See Interstate & New Zealand drivers licences.

Q. I'm in Victoria on holidays. Can I use my overseas licence to drive in Victoria?
A.
Yes you can. If you are on a temporary visa, you can drive in Victoria for an indefinite period as long as your licence is current and in English. If you are on a permanent visa, you can drive in Victoria for a period of 6 months on your overseas licence and then you must convert it to a Victorian licence. See Overseas drivers - licences.

Q. I want to get a boat licence. What do I need to do?
A.
You need to get the Victorian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook from your local newsagent, bookstore or VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Once you have studied the book, you can make an appointment to do the test at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. See Boat licences.

Q. I have misplaced my driver licence. How can I get it replaced?
A.
You can call VicRoads on 13 11 71 and pay by credit card for a replacement licence or attend any VicRoads Customer Service Centre. The new licence will then be mailed to you. See Replacing a licence or permit.

Q. I just received a letter informing me of my demerit points. How does the demerit points system work?
A.
You can attract demerit points for a range of traffic related offences including speeding, talking on a mobile phone and running a red light. If you are a fully licensed driver and you accumulate 12 demerit points over any three year period, your licence can be suspended. If you are a learner or probationary driver and you accumulate five points in a twelve month period, your licence or permit can be suspended. See Demerit points

Q. I am applying for a car learner permit. Which Evidence of identity documents are accepted by VicRoads?
A.
To apply for a car learner permit you must supply one primary evidence document such as a birth certificate or passport, one secondary evidence document which confirms the use of your name in the community (eg. utility bill or bank statement etc.).
