A motorcycle learner permit allows you to learn to ride on the road under certain
restrictions and conditions. The permit is valid for 15 months or until you obtain a motorcycle licence. If you do not obtain a motorcycle licence before your learner permit expires, you will need to be retested to have another learner permit issued.
You must be at least 18 years of age and a Victorian resident to apply for a motorcycle learner permit.
To obtain a motorcycle learner permit you will need to pass the following tests:
-
eyesight test
-
motorcycle knowledge test
-
learner permit road law knowledge test (not required if you already have a car learner permit)
-
motorcycle learner permit skill assessment (a practical ride)
You must hold a learner permit continuously for at least three months in the period immediately prior to applying for a motorcycle licence, or provide evidence that you have previously held a motorcycle licence in Victoria, interstate or overseas.
Note: Please check with your Accredited motorcycle provider first to see if they offer training courses so upon successful completion of this course the mandatory 3 month waiting period can be waived.
To prepare for your tests you need to study the Victorian Rider handbook which can be purchased from VicRoads online bookshop,VicRoads Customer Service Centres, RACV offices, some newsagents and bookshops.
Motorcycle learner permit tests are conducted by VicRoads accredited providers. These providers also offer training courses to prepare you for these tests. The Motorcycle Provider must obtain clearance from VicRoads prior to you being assessed for your Motorcycle Learner Permit or Licence test.
To make an appointment call a VicRoads accredited provider nearest you.
The fees for motorcycle tests and training will vary according to the provider you select. Please refer to driver licence and learner permit fees for information on the learner permit fee.
On the day of your test you need to bring your car driver licence or learner permit as evidence of identity. If you do not have one, you need to bring other
original evidence of identity documents.
You must provide:
-
one primary evidence document (eg. Australian birth certificate or passport)
-
one secondary evidence document (eg. Medicare card, credit/account card, student identity card, bank statement)
-
evidence of residence (if not indicated in the primary or secondary documents)
One of these documents must have your signature on it.
You will need to complete the Licence or Learner permit application form.
It is important you understand and follow all restrictions and conditions that apply to motorcycle learner permit holders.
