The Victorian Taxi Directorate is responsible for administering all regulatory functions for taxis, hire vehicles, commercial passenger vehicles and the Multi Purpose Taxi Programme (MPTP).

If you want to apply to become an Authorised Driving Instructor, taxi driver, bus driver or commercial passenger vehicle driver, you should contact the Victorian Taxi Directorate for more detailed information. However, you can apply for a Driver Accreditation to drive a Country Taxi at VicRoads.

VicRoads does not issue or renew:

  • Driver Instructor Authority
  • Multi Purpose Taxi Programme

Apply for a Driver Accreditation at VicRoads
You can apply for a Driver Accreditation to drive a Country Taxi or a commercial passenger vehicle (eg. to drive a bus, limousine etc) at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. If you wish to apply for a Driver Accreditation to drive a Metropolitan Taxi, you should contact the Victorian Taxi Directorate.

Eligibility
To obtain a Driver Accreditation you must be the holder of a full Victorian Drivers Licence and be at least 21 years of age. However, in exceptional circumstances, a driver certificate can be issued at a younger age. You need to apply directly to the Victorian Taxi Directorate.

Requirements
When applying you will need to:

  • complete an Application for Accreditation to drive a Commercial Passenger Vehicle or Private Bus form
  • provide evidence of identity accepted by the Victorian Taxi Directorate. You need to provide two primary evidence of identity, of which one must be a Victorian, South Australian, or New South Wales photo driver licence.
  • a current, original National Police Certificate. To obtain this certificate, submit a 'Consent to Check and Release National Police Record' form to Victoria Police.

Your application is then forwarded to the Victorian Taxi Directorate for assessment and approval. You will be notified if your application has been successful.

Fees
You can apply for driver accreditation for:

  • 1 year (if you are over 60 years of age, or will be within 12 months of date of issue)
  • 3 years

Refer to Vehicle Licensing fees, for more information.
