The new Victorian driver licence
From 23 November 2009, VicRoads is introducing a new and more secure learner permit, probationary licence and driver licence. When you renew or replace your licence from late November 2009, your card will be mailed to you within about a week. Select the image at the top of the page for more information.

Applying for your learner permit is the first step to getting your licence. To get your learner permit you must be at least:

  • 16 years of age for a car
  • 18 years of age for a motorcycle

To get a car learner permit you will need to pass an eyesight test and a multiple choice theory test on road law which is computer based.

To get a motorcycle learner permit you will need to pass an eyesight test, multiple choice theory test on road law knowledge and motorcycle skills plus a practical test.

To prepare for your car learner permit test you can buy the “Road to Solo Driving” handbook, available in 5 languages including English. If you are applying for a motorcycle learner permit, you will need to buy the "Victorian Rider" handbook, available in English only. You can view a read only version of both handbooks online and purchase a copy from Vicroads bookshop online, VicRoads Customer Service Centres, RACV offices, selected newsagents and bookshops.

Important: If you have a medical condition or take prescribed medication that may affect your ability to drive safely, you must provide a medical report and get clearance from VicRoads Medical Review before you can be issued with a learner permit. If you are not sure whether you need to supply a medical report please contact Medical Review on
Tel: (03) 9854 2407.

Before attempting your learner permit test, take the practice licence tests to familiarise yourself with the structure and layout of the tests.
