Getting your Ls

Important information: Victoria’s new Graduated Licensing System is an initiative to help improve the safety of young drivers. The new system will be implemented over 18 months, January 2007, July 2007 and July 2008. Visit www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au for more information on the new Graduated Licensing System.

Applying for your learner permit is the first step to getting your licence. To get your learner permit you must be at least:

  • 16 years of age for a car
  • 18 years of age for a motorcycle

To get a car learner permit you will need to pass an eyesight test and a multiple choice theory test on road law which is computer based.

To get a motorcycle learner permit you will need to pass an eyesight test, multiple choice theory test on road law knowledge and motorcycle skills plus a practical test.

To prepare for your car learner permit test you can buy the “Road to Solo Driving” handbook, available in 5 languages including English. If you are applying for a motorcycle learner permit, you will need to buy the "Victorian Rider" handbook, available in English only. You can view a read only version of both handbooks online and purchase a copy from VicRoads bookshop online, VicRoads Customer Service Centres, RACV offices, selected newsagents and bookshops.

Before attempting your learner permit test, take the practice licence tests to familiarise yourself with the structure and layout of the tests.
