New Drive Test from 1 July 2008

On 1 July 2008 new probationary licence requirements and a new drive test were introduced as part of Victoria's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). You can find more information on the GLS website.

New Licence Testing centres will be conducting drive tests for those applying for their licence. See our Licence Testing Centres.

The Drive Test
The total appointment time will be approximately 50 minutes and you must arrive prior to your scheduled appointment time. If you are late you will forfeit your booking fee and appointment fee.

The on-road component of the drive test is approximately 30 minutes in length.

The drive test checks that you can:
  • Drive safely;
  • Control a vehicle smoothly;
  • Obey the road rules; and
  • Co-operate with other road users.

You are more likely to pass the drive test if you:

  • Have more than 120 hours of supervised driving experience;
  • Have had supervised driving experience in a broad range of different conditions - such as night, in wet weather, and on different types of roads; and
  • Can drive safely and legally in different driving situations - such as normal and busy traffic, at intersections and on multilane roads.

VicRoads has prepared the video clip below which demonstrates key aspects of the new drive test by a female licence applicant. Her driving is not perfect but the video illustrates what you can expect from the new drive test.

From 1 July 2008, VicRoads will also start Learner Log Book checking for probationary licence applicants under 21 years who obtained their learner permit on or after 1 July 2007, before the drive test. Learner Log Books will be checked to ensure 120 hours of supervised driving (including 10 hours at night) has been correctly recorded.

What to bring to your appointment?

  • Your current Victorian learner permit (plastic) card;
  • Your Hazard Perception Test results;
  • Your appointment number/receipt; and
  • Your Learner Log Book - correctly filled in, with a minimum of 120 hours recorded and signed off by your supervisor*.

If you are an Overseas licence holder you must provide proof of your overseas licence. An English translation (by a qualified translator) is required if the licence is not in English. Full original evidence of identity is required if you do not hold a Victorian Learner Permit.

*Note: The Learner Log Book is only required for probationary licence applicants under 21 years who obtained their learner permit on or after 1 July 2007. Penalties apply for incomplete or incorrect Learner Log Books - you will lose your booking and test fees, be unable to sit your drive test on that day and you must wait at least six weeks before you can take your probationary licence test.

New Probationary Licence Requirements
The new probationary licence requirements will apply to all probationary licence holders who obtain their licence on or after 1 July 2008. These include a two stage/four year probationary licence system:

  • P1 (red plate) for one year; and
  • P2 (green plate) for three years.

A number of new probationary licence restrictions will also be introduced, with extra restrictions for P1 licence holders.
