Driver Reward Scheme

Victorian drivers and motorcyclists with good driving records are now rewarded with a discount on their licence renewal fee under the Driver Reward Scheme.

The Driver Reward Scheme provides Victorian drivers and motorcyclists who have remained demerit point free and have not committed serious safety related traffic offences for a three year period prior to their licence renewal with a 25 per cent discount on the cost of renewing their licence.

Who is rewarded under the Scheme?
Victorian drivers and motorcyclists with good driving records in the relevant three year period prior to renewing their licence. (See the 'how is the eligibility period for a driver reward calculated' section)

Licence holders only qualify for the reward discount if the renewal is produced 3 months prior to the expiry date, or up to 6 months after the expiry date. Outside this timeframe, the full fee must be paid.

When did the Scheme start?
The Scheme started on 1 January 2006. Drivers and motorcyclists whose licences are due for renewal on or after 1 January 2006 are eligible for a discounted licence.

What is the saving under the Scheme?
Eligible drivers and riders will receive a 25 per cent discount on the cost of renewing their licences. Currently, this equates to $11.00 off the cost of a three year licence renewal, and $37.40 of the cost of a ten year renewal.

Licence period Standard Cost Driver Reward Cost
Three years $45.30 $34.00
Ten years $154.00 $115.50

Note: The above costs are current until 1 July 2007. Licence renewal fees increase each year on 1 July in line with the CPI.

How will drivers and riders be notified if they are entitled to a discounted licence under the Driver Reward Scheme?
Drivers and riders will be informed they have received a discounted licence renewal through a letter of congratulations included with their licence renewal notice. If eligible, the licence renewal notice amount will already reflect the reward discount. Eligible licence holders can then pay their licence renewal through their preferred payment channel.

What traffic offences will exclude a motorist from receiving a reward?
Demerit point offences and other serious safety related traffic offence (which do not incur demerit points) committed in the three years prior to the expiry of a motorists licence will exclude them from receiving the discounted licence renewal. The following are the main road safety offence categories that result in a licence holder being ineligible under the Scheme:

How is the eligibility period for a driver reward calculated?
The three year period prior to the renewal is referred to as the ‘relevant eligibility period’. This relevant period is calculated from:

  • three months prior to the expiry date, and then
  • three years back from this date.

How many Victorian drivers and riders will be rewarded under the scheme?
Based on current data, around 60 per cent of all Victorian licence holders will be eligible for the reward each year.

Why has the Scheme been introduced?
Encouraging safe driving behaviour is not just about punishing unsafe driving with penalties through enforcement of the road rules but also about rewarding safe driving.

Who will benefit from the Scheme?
Safe driving benefits the entire Victorian community by making roads safer for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
Road trauma currently costs the Victorian community in excess of $2.8 billion every year, and the emotional cost is immeasurable.

How much is the Victorian Government spending on the driver reward scheme?
The Bracks Government has committed $35 million to the Driver Reward Scheme over four years. The Driver Reward Scheme is being funded entirely from safety cameras and red light camera fines.
