Renewing an expired licence

The holder of a driver licence is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains a current licence.

The new Victorian driver licence
From 23 November 2009, VicRoads is introducing a new and more secure learner permit, probationary licence and driver licence. When you renew or replace your licence from late November 2009, the card will be mailed to you within about a week. Select the image at the top of the page for more information.


Renewal requirements for expired licences
If your licence has expired by more than six months you can renew it with the following requirements:

Licence expired by 6 months or less.
  • Payment of licence fee - the existing expiry date will be used to calculate the new expiry date.
Licence expired by more than 6 months but by no more than five (5) years.
  • Payment of licence fee - a new expiry date will be given, calculated from the date of renewal
Licence expired (by over 5 years) and the holder of a current or expired for up to or less than 5 years overseas licence.
  • Payment of licence fee - a new expiry date will be given, calculated from the date of renewal
If the licence has expired by more than 5 years and no current interstate or overseas licence is held.
  • Knowledge test
  • Drive test
  • Payment of licence fee on completion of tests - a new expiry date will be given.
Motor car licence expired by more than 5 years, and the holder of a current or expired for up to or less than five (5) years interstate motor cycle licence.
  • Drive test
  • Payment of licence fee on completion of test - a new expiry date will be given.

Licence Status 1
For Licence Status 1 in the table above, you will need to have a new expiry date so you must take your renewal notice to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

You can call VicRoads on 13 11 71 Mon - Fri 8.30am to 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm and pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to renew your licence. You will then be sent a renewal notice which you must take into a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to have your new photo taken. Alternatively, you can pay at the VicRoads Customer Service Centre by cash, cheque, money order, credit card or EFTPOS and then have your photo taken.

If you can not provide your expired licence you will need to provide other original evidence of identity documents.

As from November 2009, VicRoads will no longer issue instant Licences or Permits at our Customer Service Centres. Everyone will be issued with a stamped datacard receipt and the the Licence or Permit card will be sent in the mail.

Licence Status 2, 3 and 4
For Licence Status 2, 3 and 4 in the table above, you will need to attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

If you need to undertake a test (in Licence Status 3 and 4), you will need to make an appointment by:

  • calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon - Fri 8.30am - 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm). You can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard); OR
  • visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You can pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card


If you want to change an appointment you will need to pay another appointment fee. The test fee can be transferred to a new time (or refunded if the test is cancelled) if 24 hours notice is given.

When you attend the customer service centre, you will need to:

  • provide your expired licence as evidence of identity. If your licence is unavailable, you must provide other evidence of identity documentation
  • undertake any required tests
  • pay the licence fee
  • have a new digitised image made


Once you have passed the tests and paid the fee you will receive a stamped datacard receipt and your licence card will be sent to you in the mail.

Licence Status 5
You can renew your licence by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm and paying by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre or Photo Point.


Fees

Refer to the Driver Licence and Learner Permit fees for the information on the following fees:

  • Appointment
  • Road law knowledge test
  • Practical drive test
  • Licence - 10 years or 3 years


There are no fee concessions for licence fees.


Evidence of Identity
If you can not provide your expired licence as evidence of identity you will need to provide other original evidence of identity documents.

If you are attending a VicRoads office you will need to provide multiple evidence of identity documents of:

  • one primary evidence document (eg. Australian birth certificate or passport)
  • one secondary evidence document (eg Medicare card, credit/debit account card, student identity card, bank statement)
  •  evidence of residence (if not indicated in the primary or secondary documents)


One of these documents must have your signature on it.
