Renewing an expired licence

The holder of a driver licence is responsible for ensuring that he/she maintains a current licence.

Renewal requirements for expired licences
If your licence has expired by more than six months you can renew it with the following requirements:

1. If your licence has expired by more than six months but by no more than five years.
  • Pay licence fee.
  • A new expiry date will be given.
2. If your licence has expired by more than five years and you hold an overseas licence which is current or expired for no more than five years.
Note: You must either surrender or have your overseas licence invalidated once a Victorian licence is issued.
  • Pay licence fee.
  • A new expiry date will be given.
3. If your licence has expired by more than five years.
  • Pass road law knowledge test.
  • Pass practical drive test.
  • Pay licence fee.
  • A new expiry date will be given.
4. If your licence has expired by more than five years and you hold an interstate motor cycle licence which is current or expired for no more than five years.
  • Pass road law knowledge test.
  • Pass practical drive test
  • Pay licence fee.
  • A new expiry date will be given.
5. Licence expired by less than six months
  • Pay licence fee

Licence Status 1
For Licence Status 1 in the table above, you will need to have a new photo taken so you must take your renewal notice to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

You can call VicRoads on 13 11 71 Mon - Fri 8.30am to 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm and pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) to renew your licence. You will then be sent a renewal notice which you must take into a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to have your new photo taken. Alternatively, you can pay at the VicRoads Customer Service Centre by cash, cheque, money order, credit card or EFTPOS and then have your photo taken.

You can only use your expired licence as evidence of identity if it is expired by less than two years. If you can not provide your expired licence you will need to provide other original evidence of identity documents.

Your new licence will be issued to you immediately at the VicRoads Customer Service Centre.


Licence Status 2, 3 and 4
For Licence Status 2, 3 and 4 in the table above, you will need to attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

If you need to undertake a test (in Licence Status 3 and 4), you will need to make an appointment by:

  • calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon - Fri 8.30am - 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm). You can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard); OR
  • visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You can pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card


If you want to change an appointment you will need to pay another appointment fee. The test fee can be transferred to a new time (or refunded if the test is cancelled) if 24 hours notice is given.

When you attend the customer service centre, you will need to:

  • provide your expired licence as evidence of identity. If your licence is unavailable, you must provide other evidence of identity documentation
  • undertake any required tests
  • pay the licence fee
  • have a new digitised image made


Once you have passed the tests and paid the fee you will receive your new licence immediately.


Licence Status 5
You can renew your licence by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 Mon-Fri 8.30am to 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm and paying by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre or Photo Point.


Fees

Refer to the Driver Licence and Learner Permit fees for the information on the following fees:

  • Appointment
  • Road law knowledge test
  • Practical drive test
  • Licence - 10 years or 3 years


There are no fee concessions for licence fees.


Evidence of Identity
If you can not provide your expired licence as evidence of identity you will need to provide other original evidence of identity documents.

If you are attending a VicRoads office you will need to provide multiple evidence of identity documents of:

  • one primary evidence document (eg. Australian birth certificate or passport)
  • one secondary evidence document (eg Medicare card, credit/debit account card, student identity card, bank statement)
  •  evidence of residence (if not indicated in the primary or secondary documents)


One of these documents must have your signature on it.
