Surrendering your licence

If you do not want to renew your licence, you can surrender it voluntarily and apply for a refund of the unused portion of fees.

The following persons are authorised to surrender a Victorian driver licence:

  • the licence holder
  • any family member with supporting documentation from the licence holder
  • an executor of an estate who can provide the original will appointing that executor
  • an appointed administrator who can provide the Letters of Administration
  • a person who is legally appointed to act for another person (Power of Attorney)
  • a medical practitioner with supporting documentation from the licence holder

Surrendering the licence and applying for a refund

You can surrender the licence and apply for a refund in person or by mail by completing a refund form.

Providing there is at least one month currency remaining, a refund is payable to the licence holder, their trustee, agent, power of attorney, or, where the licence holder is deceased, the executor or estate. If payment to an Estate is not appropriate, then the request must state who the cheque is payable to.

A request for a refund must be in writing, with supporting documentation as above.

Note: All documentation must be originals or certified copies.

In person

The licence holder or authorised person can attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to complete a refund form and hand in the licence card. A refund cheque will be mailed out in approximately four to six weeks. Refunds cannot be issued instantly.

By mail

The licence holder or authorised person can surrender the licence by mailing a completed refund form and the licence to VicRoads at the following address:
