return to M80 Upgrade website

The M80 Ring Road Upgrade is a project dedicated to improving the 38 kilometre M80 freeway from the Princes Freeway in Laverton North to the Greensborough Highway in Greensborough.

As part of the upgrade, a new bridge over Moonee Ponds Creek is being built. More than one hundred 60 tonne steel reinforced concrete beams form the bridge deck.

The new bridge will carry Greensborough bound traffic, while the existing bridge will carry Altona bound traffic.

This bridge will ease the uphill climb, as it is six metres taller than the existing bridge. This will mean a safer ride, as drivers will more easily maintain a constant speed and need not weave or brake to avoid slower vehicles.

The new bridge means that drivers Greensborough bound wanting to exit onto Pascoe Vale Road must prepare to exit by getting into the left hand lane earlier than before.

Traffic will be moved onto the bridge in stages, with the first lane switched over in January 2012. More lanes are expected to be moved in April.
