VicRoads is working with the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (formerly the Roads and Traffic Authority), the Australian Government, road and police agencies from across Australia and transport industry associations to implement the Operational Pilot of Electronic Work Diaries (EWDs).
The Pilot will further inform the national policy and draft specification for EWDs and progress the development of guidelines for the approval and use of EWDs.
Stage one of the Pilot, which launched on 25 July 2011, is expected to run for up to six months on key routes between New South Wales and Victoria. Stage one includes at least nine transport operators, 27 vehicles, 10 suppliers of Pilot systems and about 20 enforcement officers from the Roads and Maritime Services, NSW Police, VicRoads and Victoria Police.
The Pilot is being conducted by Transport Certification Australia on behalf of the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services.
Legislation in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and South Australia requires many heavy vehicle drivers to keep a work diary to record hours of work and rest when travelling more than 100km (200km for Queensland) from base. Basic Fatigue Management and Advanced Fatigue Management drivers outside NSW must complete a work diary regardless of the distance from their base.
