Automatic incident detection systems

On many of Melbourne’s freeways there are automated detection systems installed to notify Traffic Management Centre (TMC) staff of unusual traffic conditions. Freeway system detector stations are located at regular intervals along the freeway transmitting information to the TMC about traffic volumes and vehicle speeds. The system can distinguish between typical traffic congestion and unusual congestion, which may be the result of an incident. When unusual congestion occurs TMC staff use traffic cameras to monitor and confirm problems, and respond as required.

If there is a need to close a major freeway or arterial road due to an incident, special diversions are used. These plans have been developed with emergency services, local government and VicRoads.
