Victoria’s freeway, arterial and municipal road network covers about 150,000 kilometres, with funding responsibility shared between state, local, and federal government, as well as private toll way operators.
We manage and develop most freeways and all arterial roads, which carry the majority of Victoria’s traffic. This comprises of around 22,400 kilometres and approximately 890 roads.
The responsibility to maintain specified parts of the road reserves are allocated under the Road Management Act 2004 to particular road authorities, generally either VicRoads or the relevant council.
Most other roads that make up Victoria’s road network are managed, maintained and developed by the 79 local municipal councils (129,000 kilometres), the Department of Sustainability & Environment and other government organisations (50,000 kilometres).
