The Victorian Road Rules require that the rider of a motorcycle and any passenger on a motorcycle wear motorcycle helmets that are marked with an official standards mark certifying compliance with Australian Standard AS 1698 (now AS/NZS 1698).
Only companies accredited by JAS-ANZ (the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand) may certify compliance with the standard. Currently there are three companies that can do this. They are:
- BSI Management Systems Australia and New Zealand Pty Ltd
- Global-Mark Pty Ltd
- SAI Global Certification Services Pty Ltd trading as SAI Global
Additional companies may be accredited by JAS-ANZ in the future. To confirm if a company is accredited to certify compliance, please visit the JAS-ANZ website at: http://www.jas-anz.com.au
The mark designs shown below are examples only of those provided by the three accredited companies. Those used on motorcycle helmets will include the Australian/New Zealand Standard number AS/NZS 1698.

If a helmet does not have one of these marks, don’t buy it. It does not have an official standards mark and it is not clear that the helmet complies with the relevant Australian Standard.
Using the helmet while riding a motorcycle on Victorian roads would be an offence.
