The proposed options for the upgrading of Breakwater Road, Geelong went on exhibition this week, VicRoads Regional Director South Western Region, Duncan Elliott said.

“The three options will be on exhibition for six weeks, giving the community until 24 July 2008 to comment on the three options.

“Breakwater Road is an important east-west arterial freight route carrying more than 18,000 vehicles per day.

“VicRoads has investigated long term options to ensure that the most effective route is achieved and has identified three potential alignment options, including VicRoads preferred option to the north,” Mr Elliott said.

“An amendment to the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme has been prepared to enable an upgrade to Breakwater Road based on VicRoads preferred option.

“The preferred proposal seeks to improve the traffic flow and reliability of the Geelong road network by providing a direct connection between Breakwater Road and Fellmongers Road.

“This option will include a new bridge connection across the Barwon River which will replace the existing crossing which is flood-prone and height-restricted by the Melbourne to Warrnambool Railway Bridge.

“The outcome of successfully implementing this proposal will be a more direct, efficient and reliable route for the main flow of traffic, which will reap benefits for Geelong’s entire road network.

“However, we do want to hear the community’s views about all the options first,” Mr Elliott said.

At the conclusion of the six week exhibition period on 24 July 2008, submissions will be reviewed by an independent Panel/Advisory Committee.

The options can be viewed during office hours at the following:
