From the Minister for Roads and Ports
Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas today announced 64 new road safety projects worth $10.9 million on outer metropolitan and rural arterial road intersections as part of the Brumby Government’s Greyspot Program.
Mr Pallas said the Brumby Government was taking action to improve safety on the Victorian road network and today’s announcement brings the Government’s total commitment to the Greyspot Program to $26 million, with a total of 130 sites identified since 2006.
"While the Blackspot and Safer Road Infrastructure Program target intersections with a recognised crash history, the Greyspot Program targets locations where the possible risk of future crashes has been identified," Mr Pallas said.
"When selecting sites, the layout of the road, speed limit and traffic volumes are all taken into account."
Mr Pallas announced the funding at Mickleham Road which is set for two safety projects worth $660,000.
"The $310,000 project planned for the intersection of Mickleham Road and Mount Ridley Road include road surfacing, improved lighting, additional signage, line marking and new right turn lanes at the intersection," Mr Pallas said.
"The intersection of Mickleham Road and Donnybrook Road is to receive $350,000 in safety treatments including lighting, a new traffic island, guard rails and reflective road markers.
"The planned Mickleham Road works are excellent examples of providing effective road safety treatments to protect road users from future crashes."
Mr Pallas said a majority of the Greyspot program will be delivered in country Victoria to target locations where the visibility of the intersection or the design of the intersection could be improved.
"Victoria Is leading the nation in reducing road trauma and we want to continue to improve road safety for all Victorians. The Brumby Government’s new arrive alive strategy aims to reduce fatalities and serious injuries by a further 30 per cent by 2017," Mr Pallas said.
Member for Yuroke Liz Beattie MP, said the Mickleham Road and Mount Ridley Road was a renowned trouble spot.
"There have been numerous near misses at this intersection and these safety improvements will go a long way to preventing future accidents," Ms Beattie said.
"The Greyspot Program is vital to further improving road safety in Victoria and making our suburbs and regional areas safer."
The Greyspot Program forms part of the Safer Road Infrastructure Program to which the Brumby Government has committed $650 million over next 10 years.
