A new website providing real time travel information around the Port of Melbourne will improve freight movement and reduce congestion, Roads and Ports Minister Tim Pallas said today.

Mr Pallas said the Brumby Government was committed to delivering a more efficient freight and logistics system for Victoria and the new Connect Freight website will help traffic operations.

“Connect Freight reports on traffic conditions in the Port precinct and along the Monash Freeway, Citylink and the Princes Highway freight corridor between Dandenong and the Port of Melbourne,” Mr Pallas said. 

“Registered freight operators can access real time information on congestion levels by CCTV footage of key locations at the Port.

“Operators can also sign up for customised SMS or email updates on traffic conditions, incidents, road work and travel time, as well as view current traffic reports online.  

“These tools will help the industry to plan the movement of their fleets and maximise efficiency.”

Mr Pallas said the website was one of the projects being delivered, in conjunction with VicRoads, as part of the Brumby Government’s broader Connect Freight initiative.

“The Connect Freight initiative aims to develop information and communications systems for the freight industry to improve efficiency and reduce congestion in the Port of Melbourne supply chain,” he said. 

“This website is another example of the Government working with industry to ensure the Port of Melbourne retains its position as Australia’s largest and most efficient port.”

The website is a trial project and industry feedback is welcomed. The Connect Freight website address is www.connectfreight.com.au
