A Vehicle Information Package (VIP) is a quick and easy way to get detailed information about a vehicle before you buy. The Certificate of Registered Security Interest supplied with a VIP will protect you from repossession by a financier.

A VIP is a package of information issued by VicRoads. It provides a detailed record about any Victorian registered vehicle (excluding private information).
A VIP can be purchased for a car, truck, bus or motorcycle.
Information in a VIP includes:
- if the vehicle has been recorded as written off, including the date, type and severity of damage
- if the vehicle is recorded as stolen
- details of any registered security interests recorded on the vehicle
- if the vehicle registration is current, expired, suspended or cancelled
- vehicle information including make, model, body type and year of manufacture
- number of times the vehicle has been transferred
- the postcodes where the vehicle has been garaged in Victoria.
A Certificate of Registered Security Interest is included with a VIP. This will protect you from repossession by a financial institution only if the vehicle is purchased within 24 hours of its issue and the vehicle details (VIN, engine number and registration) on the certificate match those on the vehicle.
A VIP should be purchased no more than 24 hours before you buy a vehicle. The information contained in the VIP is only current at the time it is produced as details could change at any time after.
- Buy a VIP online to get the information instantly
- Call us on 13 11 71 to have the information delivered by post or fax.
The cost is $24.00. This can be paid securely online with a Visa or MasterCard.
The following information is needed to get a VIP:
- the vehicle registration number
- the Vehicle Identification number (VIN)
- the engine number (stamped onto the vehicle).
It is important that you get these details directly from the vehicle and not from any documents that the seller offers you. The manufacturer’s handbook can help you find the VIN and engine number. Also check that these details match those on the vehicle's registration sticker. If the information you supply is incorrect the Vehicle Securities Register certificate will be void.
VIP information is taken from VicRoads records at the time and date of request. This information is supplied to VicRoads by past and present registered owners of the vehicle, Police, interstate registration authorities, insurers and financial institutions.
All information in the VIP is provided without liability or responsibility for its accuracy. VicRoads accepts no liability for any loss incurred by you or another person as a result of reliance on the information in the VIP.
