The environment is integral to VicRoads operations. We develop, maintain and manage Victoria's $17 billion arterial road network. Environmental impacts are considered at each stage.
We aim for sustainability in every area, from building roads to running our offices.
– Our Environment Strategy and Environmental Sustainability Policy detail our efforts to improve the road network and lessen our environmental impact. Through project planning and delivery, we effectively manage environmental issues.
– We are working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Our initiatives aim to improve energy efficiency, increase renewable energy used in street lighting, and reduce energy in road design.
– We are committed to minimising construction and traffic noise impacts on residents near freeways and arterial roads.
– We avoid, minimise and offset impacts to native plants. We maintain roadside vegetation to help protect Victoria’s biodiversity.
– Our management strategies help us identify and protect cultural heritage values.
– The land rights of Indigenous peoples are addressed on all road projects.
– Integrating roads with existing infrastructure, and addressing the needs of drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users are key elements of a well-planned and functional environment.
– We are committed to using recycled materials in road construction where possible.
– We protect groundwater and waterways through best practice site management. Recycled water is our main water source in construction and maintenance. You can register your recycled water source for us to use in road projects.
