Noise

Rockwall noise barriers were included along Geelong Road to shield local residents from road traffic noise.

Road traffic noise can be a major nuisance, particularly in residential areas. We are working to reduce overall traffic noise levels, and to limit noise impacts from new or upgraded roads.

Traffic noise reduction measures
Traffic noise levels are investigated during road planning. We consider the impact on noise-sensitive areas such as residential dwellings, hospitals, motels, schools and libraries.

The VicRoads Traffic Noise Reduction Policy details acceptable noise limits. If these limits are exceeded, noise reduction measures may be needed.

Noise reduction measures include:

  • low noise road surface
  • noise walls

Noise walls are usually made from timber, plastic, concrete or steel. Recycled materials are under consideration for future noise walls.

The Victorian Transport Plan (December 2008), outlines $100 million funding for a noise wall retrofitting program. This will lessen the impact of freeway noise.

Alternative freight routes
Noise and pollution from freight activities is considered in the Victorian Transport Plan. The Truck Action Plan encourages trucks onto routes optimised for freight. It aims to protect local neighbourhoods from existing and new freight developments.

Compatible land use
Development along identified road reservations and declared roads must be compatible with future traffic noise levels.
