The Bus Priority Program is part of the Victorian Government's Victorian Transport Plan announced in December 2008. A range of bus priority projects will be developed and delivered by VicRoads, with the aim of improving the reliability and travel times of buses on selected routes or sections of routes.
These projects complement the bus priority projects being delivered under the SmartBus program.
Current projects being delivered by VicRoads as part of the Bus Priority Program include:
Full-time bus lanes will be installed on three-lane sections of Stud Road in Wantirna South, Scoresby and Rowville. Part-time bus lanes will be installed on three-lane sections of Stud Road in Dandenong. Stud Road is part of the yellow orbital SmartBus route and the new bus lanes will improve bus services along Stud Road.
Part-time bus lanes are proposed on Springvale Road in Clayton, Forest Hill, Lyndhurst, Mitcham, Mordialloc, Mount Waverely and Mulgrave. Springvale Road is part of the green orbital SmartBus route and the bus lanes will improve bus services along Springvale Road.
Traffic lane capacity in the westbound direction will be improved between Southbank Boulevard and Power Street in Southbank. This will facilitate bus movements from Southbank Boulevard to Power Street.
Detector loops will be installed to provide signal priority for eastbound buses on Darebin Road at Station Street in Fairfield.
A short bus lane with red surface treatment is proposed to be installed on Rushall Crescent at the approach to Queens Parade in Fitzroy North. Signal priority will also be installed at the intersection to give priority to buses.
The current southbound bus lane on Queens Bridge Street, between Flinders Street and Power Street, will be extended to provide buses with more priority during peak periods. The bus lane will also be installed with red pavement.
New coloured bus lanes are proposed to be installed in the northbound and southbound directions on Warrigal Road, between High Street Road and Gardiners Creek Bridge, to give priority to buses during peak hours.
There is also a proposal to convert the kerbside lane into a bus lane extending from the bridge over Gardiners Creek to The Boulevard. 'B' lights will be installed at the Warrigal Road/The Boulevard intersection.
New bus lanes are proposed to be installed in both directions on Centre Dandenong Road, between Howard Road and Fairway Drive in Dingley Village, to improve bus travel times and reliability.
New traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Ringwood-Warrandyte Road and Milne Road in Ringwood North. The traffic signals will provide priority for buses that travel through the intersection and improve safety for all road users.
