Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR)

Bookmark and Share

Introduced on 30 January 2012, the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR) is a national register for recording security interests (e.g. encumbrances or monies owing) in personal property including vehicles. The PPSR does not include real estate property, such as houses or land. PPSR will provide a national service to check if a vehicle is encumbered (monies owing), written-off, stolen or registered.

What happens to the Vehicle Securities Register (VSR)?
VicRoads has operated the Vehicle Security Register (VSR) electronic system since 1994.  With the launch of the PPSR, the VSR closed and VicRoads no longer offers vehicle pre-purchase checks. VicRoads will provide the registration status of a vehicle and will confirm the registered operator details.

What information is available for search on PPSR?
The following vehicle validation information will be available for search on PPSR:

  • encumbrance (monies owing)
  • vehicle details (such as make and model)
  • registration status
  • stolen status
  • written off status
This information will be provided in a PPSR Search Certificate (fees apply).

You can find more information about PPSR by visiting the Personal Property Securities website.
