Vehicle Securities Register

On 30 January 2012 the Australian Government introduced the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR). The PPSR is the national service to find out if a vehicle is encumbered, written-off, stolen or registered in any state or territory of Australia.

Victoria’s Vehicle Security Register (VSR) closed at 5pm on Friday 27 January, 2012. VicRoads no longer provides information through the Vehicle Securities Register, Vehicle Information Packages and Vehicle Status Checks.

Personal Property Securities Register
The Personal Property Securities Register will be the national service allowing you to check the details of a used car prior to purchase. The following information will be provided in a PPSR Search Certificate (fees apply):

  • encumbrances (money owing)
  • vehicle details (such as the make and model)
  • registration status
  • stolen status
  • written-off status

Vehicle Registration Enquiry Service

The Vehicle Registration Enquiry check is a free service provided by VicRoads that allows you to confirm the registration status of vehicles on the Victorian Vehicles Register including cars, motorcycles, trucks, trailers and caravans. Information provided may include:

  • registration status (current, expired, suspended or cancelled)
  • VIN / chassis number
  • engine number
  • make, colour and body type
  • year of manufacture

VSR Archive Register
A VSR Archive Register will be available for any security interests registered up until 5pm 27 January, 2012. A copy of the original certificate of registered interests is available (fees apply). This service is available 8.30-5pm Monday to Friday.
