Vehicle registration can be cancelled voluntarily at anytime by the registered operator and a refund claimed on the unused portion of the registration. The number plates must be either returned to any VicRoads Customer Service Centre or placed in self retention. If the plates are lost or stolen, the registered operator or applicant must sign a statement to this effect.
You can cancel your vehicle registration over the phone, by attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, or by mail.
Another person can request a registration cancellation on behalf of the registered operator if that person has a letter from the operator authorising them to act on the operator's behalf and the request is directed through the mail or processed at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
If the vehicle is registered in the name of an incorporated body the request must be made in writing on company letterhead and signed by a person authorised to sign on behalf of the company.
VicRoads reserves the right to refuse a refund of registration request if it not satisfied that suitable authority from the registered operator has been provided.
