Vehicle registration can be cancelled voluntarily at anytime by the registered operator and a refund claimed on the unused portion of the registration. The number plates must be either returned to any VicRoads Customer Service Centre or placed in self retention. A 10% administration fee is applicable to all pro-rata refunds and is to be deducted from the amount to be refunded. If the plates are lost or stolen, the registered operator or applicant must sign a statement to this effect.
You can cancel your vehicle registration over the phone, by attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, or by mail.
Another person can request a registration cancellation on behalf of the registered operator if that person has a letter from the operator authorising them to act on the operator's behalf and the request is directed through the mail or processed at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.
If the vehicle is registered in the name of an incorporated body the request must be made in writing on company letterhead and signed by a person authorised to sign on behalf of the company.
VicRoads reserves the right to refuse a refund of registration request if it not satisfied that suitable authority from the registered operator has been provided.
