Requests for registration cancellation

The registration of a vehicle can be cancelled at the request of the registered operator of the vehicle.

Another person can request a registration cancellation on behalf of a registered operator if that person has a letter from the operator authorising them to act on the operator's behalf and the request is directed through the mail or processed at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

If the registered operator is an incorporated body the request must be made in writing on company letterhead and signed by a person authorised to sign on behalf of the company.

A vehicle registration cancellation will be effective from the date VicRoads receives the request (or if the vehicle is written off, from the date of the accident).

How to request a cancellation
A vehicle registration cancellation can be requested either:

  • by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm)
  • by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre (Mon-Thu 8.30am - 4.30pm; Fri 8.30am - 5.00pm)
  • by mail to VicRoads at GPO Box 1644, Melbourne 3001

When requesting a registration cancellation you will need to provide the following information:

  • full name of registered operator
  • address of registered operator
  • driver licence number of the registered operator or the vehicle serial number (if the registered operator does not hold a driver licence or is an incorporated body)

Claiming a refund
The registered operator (or an agent authorised in writing by the registered operator) may claim a refund of the unused portion of the registration and TAC charge. To claim a refund you must:

  • complete a Refund form signed by the registered operator or other authorised person
  • provide evidence of identity (see below)
  • return the number plates to a VicRoads Customer Service Centre

If your current plates have been lost or stolen you will need to provide a report from the police.

If the registered operator wishes to keep the number plates, VicRoads will assign the number plates to that person (self retention) on the condition that the plates are kept in that person's possession and are not placed on any other vehicle without advising VicRoads.

Refund cheques are mailed to the address recorded on the VicRoads database and may take four to six weeks to receive.

Evidence of Identity
You will need to bring your current Victorian driver licence/permit. If you cannot provide this you will need to bring original evidence of identity documents.
