If you wish to transfer vehicle registration to a spouse, domestic partner* or family member you will need to submit a vehicle registration transfer form to VicRoads within 14 days of the vehicle handover along with the required documents and fees.
* A domestic partner is a person that you are in a domestic relationship with and living with as a couple (also called de-facto relationship).
A transfer from a current spouse/domestic partner to the other requires:
- a completed and signed vehicle registration transfer form, and
- the transfer fee, and
- the original marriage certificate (for married partners) or statutory declarations from both parties declaring the domestic relationship (for de-facto partners)
This transfer is exempt from a certificate of roadworthiness and motor vehicle duty.
A transfer from a former spouse/domestic partner to the other requires:
- a completed and signed vehicle registration transfer form, and
- the transfer fee, and
- either a copy of the Family Court Order including the court order number and the details of the vehicle, or
- a copy of the Mediation Agreement endorsed by a court, community mediation centre or a solicitor along with a letter from the current owner stating their consent to transfer the vehicle.
This transfer is exempt from a certificate of roadworthiness and motor vehicle duty.

The transfer fees payable are:
- motor vehicle (cars and truck) - $32.10
- motor cycles - $5.50
- trailers - $5.50
Motor vehicle duty is the tax payable when a vehicle is registered or transferred to another registered operator. The amount payable is based on the purchase price or the price which could be obtained in the open market (whichever is greater). Motor vehicle duty payable is $8 for every $200 (or part thereof) of the market value.

The transfer application form must be completed in full. You can lodge transfer documents by:
- posting all the required documents and appropriate fees (cheque or money order) to VicRoads, GPO Box 1644, Melbourne 3001, or
- visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. Fees can be paid by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card (Visa or Mastercard).
