The Federal Interstate Registration Scheme allows you to use the vehicle for interstate transportation of goods throughout all states and territories of Australia. However, it restricts you from using the vehicle for any local work.
To have your vehicle registered as Federal Interstate, full registration is required, even if your vehicle is currently registered in Victoria. You are exempt from having to pay motor vehicle duty. You will need:
- a vehicle inspection
- a roadworthy certificate
- evidence of ownership
- evidence of identity
- evidence of origin
- to show the engine number
- to show the chassis number
- a weighbridge ticket (available from any Public weighbridge station. Call 1300 365 500 for your nearest location)
On the day you register the vehicle you need to bring your current Victorian driver licence/permit. If you cannot provide this you will need to bring original evidence of identity documents. You must provide:
- one primary evidence document (eg. birth certificate or current passport)
- one secondary evidence document (eg. Medicare card, credit/account card, student identity card, bank statement)
- evidence of residence (if not indicated in the primary or secondary documents)
One of these documents must have your signature on it.
- Appointment and Inspection - $33.35
- The Federal Interstate registration fee, Transport Accident Commission Charges payable will vary depending on the type and size of the vehicle and the garaging location.
- Administration fee on initital registration - Heavy vehicle - $81.00, heavy trailer - $58.00
- Administration fee on renewal - $23.00
- Administration fee on transfer - $17.00
- Standard number plate - no fee
Renewal of registration can be for either 12 months or 3 months.
When renewing your Federal Interstate registration you will need to supply VicRoads with a Victorian or interstate roadworthy certificate or evidence that the vehicle belongs to an approved maintenance management scheme (evidence can be a letter admitting the company to the maintenance management scheme).
