Registering a vehicle for someone else

If you are unable to attend a VicRoads office in person you may appoint someone (an agent) to act on your behalf.

If you are acting on behalf of an incorporated company, a company director must appoint you to act on behalf of the company.

To act on behalf of an individual or an incorporated company, the agent# must provide a original letter of authority.

# Agent must also provide their own photo licence* or full Evidence of Identity requirements.  

A letter of authority must contain:

For Individuals
  • full name and address of yourself
  • your licence number
  • your signature
  • name of person acting for you
  • details of the transaction the agent may perform for you
For Incorporated Companies
  • full company name and address on letterhead; and
  • Australian company number (ACN) or Certificate of Incorporation; and
  • the vehicle/s registration number (if known) and vehicle make and type; and
  • authorising representative's name and signature and a statement from them that they are authorised to appoint the agent; and
  • name of the agent; and
  • details of the transaction the agent may perform.

Evidence of identity
Where the vehicle is to be registered to a private person, your current photo licence or original primary and secondary evidence of identity documents must be provided for yourself. Your agent must also provide their current photo licence* or provide original primary and secondary evidence of identity documents.

Please note: VicRoads will not accept photocopies of photo licences or evidence of identity documents.

*'Photo licence' means any Australian photo driver licence or photo learner permit which is current or expired by no more than two years, or Victorian Boat Operator licence or Victorian firearm licence which is current or expired no more than two years.

  • take a test
  • purchase a log book
  • have a photo taken
