Transport Accident Commission (TAC) charge

A Transport Accident charge is included in your annual registration renewal fee on each vehicle you own. These charges are used to pay for treatment and support services for people injured in transport accidents.

The TAC is strictly 'people' insurance, it does not cover any property damage.

Calculation of TAC charge
The TAC charge is calculated according to the:

The garaged location will be in one of three risk zones, high, medium or low. These are assigned by the postcode. The TAC fee is set to the relevant risk zone and an insurance duty, set by the State Revenue Office, is also added.

For a full listing of TAC charges, visit the TAC website at www.tac.vic.gov.au

Visiting overseas vehicles or vehicles driven on private property
A currently registered visiting overseas vehicle being driven on a public road must have TAC coverage. If you are driving a vehicle on private property eg. hobby farm etc., you can take out TAC coverage, however, it is not compulsory. You can get TAC coverage by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon - Fri 8.30am - 5.00pm, Sat 8.30am - 2.00pm) and providing your vehicle details. You can pay using either Mastercard or Visa. The document can then be mailed or faxed to you. Vehicles visiting Victoria that do not have registration are required to be issued with a conditional Unregistered Vehicle Permit.
