Who can register a vehicle?

A vehicle can be registered in the name of a person or an incorporated body. A vehicle cannot be registered in the name of a business, an unincorporated group or under a trading name.


A person
You can register a vehicle in your own name. Vehicles cannot be registered in more than one name.
To register a vehicle your minimum age must be:

  • 17 years – for a light vehicle or trailer (4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass or less)
  • 17 years and 9 months – for a motorcycle
  • 18 years – for a heavy vehicle or trailer (over 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass).


If under the minimum age, your vehicle must be registered in someone else’s name (eg. a parent, guardian or sibling).

An incorporated body
An incorporated body (also known as ‘body corporate’) can register a vehicle in its name. An incorporated body is an organisation formed with government approval to conduct business. Incorporated bodies usually have an Australian Company Number (ACN). The ACN must be supplied when registering a vehicle in the name of an incorporated body.

Types of incorporated bodies:

  • state school councils
  • non-state schools
  • hospitals
  • municipal councils
  • trade unions
  • scout groups - vehicles registered to scout groups should be in the name of: The Scout Association of Australia Victorian Branch (name of scout group).



Who cannot register a vehicle?
Vehicles cannot be registered in a business name, trading name or the name of an unincorporated group. If the vehicle is owned by an unincorporated body, multiple people or an emergency response organisation (egg. SES, CFA or municipality vehicles), an individual can be nominated as the registered driver.
