Bookmark and Share

You can transfer the right to display a number plate to another person or company by either:

  • signing the plates over to another person, or
  • by selling the vehicle with the number plates on the vehicle.

Note: Service Club Plates cannot be transferred.

How to transfer
To transfer the rights to display the number plates to any other person you can:

  • post a completed Transfer of Rights form to:

    VicRoads
    Registration Processing
    GPO Box 1644
    Melbourne 3001

  • attend a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and complete the Transfer of Rights form (appointment not necessary), or
  • fax the completed Transfer of Rights form to 1300 738 425

Fees

  • If plates have been previously assigned to a vehicle, an assignment fee will apply to assign them to another vehicle.
  • If you purchased a number plate prior to 3 March 2000 that means you have an old style plates contract with VicRoads. There is a transfer fee payable, which is recorded on your contract, if you want to transfer the rights of these plates to another person other than:
    • a vehicle registered in your name, or
    • the name of your spouse, or
    • your child, or
    • your parent, or
    • in the name of a company of which you are a director.

However, you can be exempt from paying the transfer fee by changing to a new style contract, at no cost, by calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 or writing to VicRoads at:
