All number plates are covered by a manufacturing warranty for ten years from the date they are issued.
The warranty covers deterioration, faulty materials and poor manufacturing. You will be able to tell by the reflective background of the plate beginning to blacken or the paint starting to crack in many fine lines (crazing). This is more common with the older green on white standard issue plates.
The warranty does not cover physical impact damage or deterioration due to normal wear and tear.
VicRoads will replace number plates under warranty free of charge. You should take your faulty number plates into any VicRoads office.
You will need to bring your current Victorian driver licence/permit. If you cannot provide this you will need to bring original evidence of identity documents.
If you cannot attend an office, you may appoint an agent to act on your behalf. You will need to provide your agent written consent.
You will be given a new set of plates (which will be a different letter and number combination) together with a new label and registration certificate immediately. If you wish to keep the same letter and number combination you will be required to pay a number plate replacement fee (see Number Plate fees) and the new plate(s) will then be mailed to you in approximately 7 - 10 working days.
If you have a faulty custom or personalised plate(s) that are under warranty, you can get a replacement plate(s) free of charge. The new plate(s) will be mailed to you in approximately 7 - 10 working days.
