Replacing lost, damaged, destroyed or stolen plates

Bookmark and Share

If the number plate on your car, motorcycle, truck or trailer has been damaged, lost or stolen, you can arrange to order a replacement plate (s) or change the registration number.

Replacement plates will have the same letter and number combination as your existing plates (with the exception of motorcycles).

A change of registration number applies when your existing registration number is exchanged for a different registration number.

Important note: From 22 October 2010, existing general issue motorcycle number plates that are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed will be replaced with the new format for motorcycle number plates as per the example below. Owners of existing custom motorcycle number plates will still be able to keep their combination. Fees apply for the replacement of lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed motorcycle plates. Below is an example of the new general issue motorcycle plate.

General issue plates recorded as stolen can not be re-ordered or reissued.

Replacement Number Plates
Ordering replacement number plates
Replacement plates can be ordered by logging onto our VPlates.com.au . Ordering your replacement plates on-line is the easiest and quickest way to replace lost or damaged plates, whether they are Custom or General issue (with the exception of motorcycle general issue plates).

Important note: Ordering a replacement for a lost, damaged or stolen motorcycle general issue plate can only be made by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre.

Payment must be made by credit card only (Visa or Mastercard) and if you do experience any difficulty on the website, replacement plates can also be ordered by:
  • calling VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5pm, Sat 8.30am - 2pm). You can pay by credit card (Visa or Mastercard)
  • visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You can pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card

Replacement plates can be ordered by the registered operator of a vehicle or an agent on behalf of a registered operator.

Ordering replacement number plates on behalf of someone else
If you are attending a VicRoads Customer Service Centre to order replacement number plates for someone else, you are required to provide a signed letter of authority form the registered operator of that vehicle allowing you to act on their behalf.

Customers requesting replacements for stolen plates are advised that while the plates remain listed as stolen, they may be subject to police enquiries about the use of plates that are reported as stolen and may receive legal documents arising from parking and other traffic infringements involving the unlawful use of the orginal plates. This does not apply to general issue plates which cannot be re-ordered or re-issued if they have been recorded as stolen.

Please note: general issue plates recorded as stolen can not be re-ordered or reissued.

Information you need to supply

When ordering replacement plates you will need to provide the following information:

  • full name of registered operator
  • address of registered operator
  • vehicle registration plate number
  • driver licence number of registered operator

Fees
See Number plate fees for replacement plates.

If the replacement plate is in the slimline format, it will incur an extra per plate. Slimline plates are not available for trailers and motor cycles.

Getting your replacement plate(s)
The replacement plate(s) will be mailed to the address of the registered operator of the vehicle 7 - 10 working days after an order is placed.

Replacement of plates seized by the police
The replacement of plates seized by police are subject to the usual replacement fees. General issue plates will not be remade, they will be replaced with the next available plate in the current series.

All other plates may be re-ordered. While the registered operator is waiting for the plates to be made, general issue plates may be issued at no fee to allow the vehicle to be driven. There will be no fee to reassign the original plates to the vehicle.

If a VicRoads error, such as a renewal payment allocated to an incorrect vehicle, has caused the vehicle to appear unregistered, plates will be replaced at no fee. General issue plates will be replaced with the next plate in the current series.

Change of General Issue Number Plates
Requesting a change of number plates
A change of number plates can only be processed by visiting a VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You can pay by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card (Visa or Mastercard)

You must return the existing number plates in order for a new registration number to be issued. If your current plates have been lost or stolen you will need to provide a report from the police.

Important note: With the release of the new format motorcycle general issue plates from 22 October 2010, you have the option of changing your old format motorcycle general issue plate to the new plate at no cost. To do so, you must visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre and be prepared to surrender your currently registered old format motorcycle plate upon change over. This offer does not apply for lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed motorcycle plates and owners who would already have the new format motorcycle general issue plate.

A change of number plates can be requested by the registered operator or an agent on behalf of the registered operator.

Evidence of Identity
When you change your number plates you need to bring your current Victorian driver licence/permit. If you cannot provide this you will need to bring original evidence of identity documents.
