Taxi Number Plates

Number plates for Taxi's may only be issued to persons holding written authority from the Victorian Taxi Directorate to allow a vehicle to be registered as a taxi cab.

Once issued, the plates must remain on the vehicle to which they are assigned until they are cancelled, a change of number is effected, or the plates are transferred to another vehicle.

The plates may only be assigned to a vehicle that is registered in the name of the owner of the taxi licence.

No fee is payable when plates are transferred from a taxi cab to another taxi or a vehicle being registered as a taxi.

Taxi plates may only be assigned to a taxi owned by the same person or incorporated body as the vehicle to which the plates were originally assigned. Any previous number plates assigned to the vehicle must be returned to VicRoads or destroyed.

Taxi plates are issued to identify vehicles licensed by the Taxi Directorate to operate a taxi service. Taxi plates differ according to the intended location of operation of the taxi and the type of licence granted.

The taxi plate slogan is 'ACCREDITED TAXI SERVICE' across the top of the plate and 'VIC' running vertically along the left side of the plate.

Taxi plates have white characters on a green reflective background with a gold southern cross design as the separator between the letters and numbers.
