Type P SPVs are plant based which generally make little use of the road network, ie. backhoes, excavators, bulldozers, headers, scrapers, tractors, off road water sprayers.

Road going truck or trailer SPV - Type T SPV
Type T SPVs are truck or road going trailer based SPVs built or permanently modified for use on roads, the primary purpose for which they are built is not the carriage of goods or passengers, ie. concrete pump, amusement rides, specially equipped heavy vehicles used by emergency services. Type T SPVs must be used within the mass limits.

Over mass SPVs - Type O SPV
Type O SPVs are SPVs (other than Type P SPVs) built or permanently modified for use on roads, the primary purpose for which they are built is not the carriage of goods or passengers, that they have at least one axle or axle group loaded in excess of the national axle limits.

Higher registration charges apply to trailers used as a “lead trailer”
in a B Double. Higher charges also apply to a “lead trailer” and a “
middle trailer” in a B Triple combination.

Registration renewal notices for all heavy trailers will be issued
showing the appropriate heavy trailer charge. Operators of lead and
middle trailers must contact VicRoads to advise whether the trailer is a lead trailer or middle trailer. A revised registration renewal notice will be
generated centrally and mailed to the operator. Until changes are
made to VicRoads’ systems, the registration renewal notice for lead
and middle trailers will show the same fee code as for heavy trailers, VicRoads will also supply the operator with a letter (to be carried in
the vehicle) confirming that the vehicle may be operated as a lead
trailer of a middle trailer.

Axle Spacing
For the calculation of the number of axles on heavy vehicles, the following rules apply:
  • 2 axles not more than 1 metre apart form the wheel centres are regarded as 1 axle
  • 3 axles not more than 2 metres apart from the wheel centres are regarded as 2 axles
  • 4 axles not more than 3.2 metres apart from the wheel centres are regarded as 3 axles
