Renewing registration

A registration renewal notice will be sent to you approximately four to six weeks prior to the expiry date.

Vehicle registration is renewed by making the appropriate payment on or before the date of expiry. If you do not renew the registration of a vehicle by midnight on the due date the vehicle will be unregistered. It is unlawful to drive a vehicle or tow a trailer after the expiry date. There is no grace period.

If payment is not received by the expiry date a reminder notice will be sent advising that the registration will be cancelled if payment is not received within three months of the expiry date. Paying the registration at any time within three months of the expiry date will register the vehicle from the date of payment until the normal expiry date.

Registration cannot be renewed if the registration has expired by more than three months or has been cancelled. In these circumstances a vehicle will need to be registered again.

Registration also cannot be renewed if the vehicle registration is under suspension. In this case, the suspension must be lifted before a renewal can be processed.

Fees
The registration renewal is made up of the following fees:

  • registration fee
  • Transport Accident charges

If you hold a Health Care, Pension Concession or Gold Repatriation Health Card you may be eligible for a concession on the renewal fee. Health Care Card holders cannot receive a concession paying via the internet or phone. Registration renewal payments cannot be paid in instalments.
