If you are the owner of two or more vehicles or vessels you can apply to have the expiry dates of the registrations changed to have all registrations fall due on the same day. This is known as common expiry. A changed expiry date can only come into effect after a vehicle/vessel's current registration period has expired.
To apply for common expiry, two or more vehicles/vessels must be registered in your name or a company name.
The first application for a common expiry date must be made in writing to the Information Services Department - Registration, 60 Denmark Street, Kew VIC 3101.
You will need to provide:
- your full name and address or company name and address of the registered owners of the vehicles/vessels
- your current driver licence of the registered owner (or licence number over the phone) or company ACN
- the vehicle/vessel registration numbers
- the desired common expiry date
All vehicles or vessels purchased after the initial approval are automatically eligible for the common expiry of registration. To add new vehicles to the common expiry date you can either:
- call VicRoads on 13 11 71 (Mon-Fri 8.30am - 5pm, Sat 8.30am - 2pm), or
- visit a VicRoads Customer Service Centre (Mon-Thu 8.30am - 4.30pm; Fri 8.30am - 5pm (excluding Melton)).
You will need to provide:
- your full name and address or company name and address
- the vehicle/vessel registration number
- the approved common expiry date
There is no charge for implementing a common expiry date however, a surcharge is applied to the pro rata registration renewal notice.
Following the expiration of the vehicle/vessel's current registration period you will be sent a renewal notice for the period from the expiration of the current period to the new expiry date.
If the common expiry date chosen is within 70 days of application, a full years registration fees must be paid in addition to the balance of fees to change the registration to the new common expiry date.
