All hybrid vehicles receive a $50 discount on registration. A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle which is powered by electricity and one or more other fuel type or types. Examples of hybrid vehicles include:
- Toyota Prius Lexus 450
- GSH Lexus RX 400H
- Honda Civic Hybrid
- Hino Hybrid Truck
It is a legal requirement for all hybrid powered vehicles to display number plate stickers identifying the vehicle as a hybrid. Go to Hybrid Vehicle Stickers information.
1. I have already paid my registration but it wasn’t due until after 1 May 2007 – am I eligible for a $50 refund? Yes. If you have already paid your registration you are eligible for a refund. A $50 cheque will be mailed to you if your vehicle registration was due on or after 1 May 2007. You do not have to contact VicRoads with your registration details. Please note, it may take between 4 – 6 weeks for your refund to be issued.
2. From 1 May 2007 will my registration fee be automatically reduced by $50?
VicRoads is currently in the process of identifying all hybrid powered vehicles and configuring their systems to allow registration renewals to be sent out at the reduced registration rate. In the meantime, if you have paid the registration fee at the full rate a $50 refund cheque will be mailed to you if your vehicle’s registration was due on or after 1 May 2007.
3. Will I have to apply for a $50 refund?
No. You do not have to apply for a refund. VicRoads is in the process of identifying all hybrid powered vehicles and sending out a $50 cheque to all those who are eligible.
4. Can I pay $50 less when I renew my registration instead of waiting for a refund?
No. Currently you must pay the full amount that is stated on your registration renewal. If you are eligible for the hybrid discount, VicRoads will send you a $50 refund cheque in the mail. Once VicRoads completes configuring their systems your registration renewals in the future will be sent out with the reduced rate.
5. How long do I have to wait for my $50 refund?
It may take between 4 – 6 weeks for you to receive your $50 refund cheque in the mail.
6. I am concession card holder – am I also entitled to a $50 registration discount on my hybrid vehicle?
Yes. If you hold a valid concession card and are also the registered operator of a hybrid vehicle, you are entitled to your normal concession rate as well as the $50 hybrid vehicle discount. However, if your discounts are greater than the cost of registration you are only entitled to a reduction in the cost of registration to $0.
7. I am a concession card holder and I pay my registration on a six month basis, how will my $50 discount be applied in this circumstance?
If you are the holder of a valid concession card and you choose to pay your registration on a six monthly basis your $50 hybrid vehicle discount will be calculated on a pro rata basis which will automatically calculate the number of days in that six month period and apply the discount accordingly. The same process will be followed in the next six months. This will add up to the $50 per annum discount that you are entitled to.
8. I have purchased a hybrid vehicle after 1 May 2007 but I paid the full registration amount – am I eligible for a $50 refund?
Yes. If you have purchased a new or used hybrid vehicle and registered it on or after 1 May 2007 you are eligible for a $50 discount on your registration. VicRoads is in the process of identifying all hybrid powered vehicles and sending out a $50 cheque to all those who are eligible. Please note, it may take between 4 – 6 weeks for your refund to be issued.
9. I have a hybrid heavy vehicle – am I entitled to a $50 refund?
Yes. All hybrid vehicles are entitled to a $50 discount on their registration. VicRoads is currently in the process of identifying all hybrid powered vehicles and configuring their systems to allow registration renewals to be sent out at the reduced registration rate. In the meantime, if you have paid the registration fee at the full rate a $50 refund cheque will be mailed to you if your vehicle’s registration was due on or after 1 May 2007.
10. I have a hybrid heavy vehicle and I pay my registration on a conditional basis, how will my $50 discount be calculated in this circumstance? If you are the registered operator of a hybrid heavy vehicle and you choose to pay your registration on a conditional basis your $50 hybrid vehicle discount will be calculated on a pro rata basis which will automatically calculate the number of days in that nominated period and apply the discount accordingly. The same process will be followed in the next nominated period.
11. I have a fully electric vehicle – am I entitled to a $50 refund?
No. Only those vehicles defined as hybrid vehicles are entitled to a $50 discount on their registration. A hybrid vehicle is a vehicle which is powered by electricity and one or more other fuel type or types.
